medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Herewith a link to an earlier 'Saints of the day' for 27. February (including Sts. Julian and Besas, martyrs of Alexandria; St. Honorina; St. Baldomerus; Sts. Basil the Confessor and Procopius the Decapolite; St. Gregory of Narek; St. Luke of Messina):

Further to Julian and Besas:
In that earlier post's notice of these saints, for their year of death read "249" rather than "259". And add that according to St. Dionysius of Alexandria Julian was so afflicted with gout that he could not even stand, let alone locomote, but had rather to be carried about by friends. Consequently, in Orthodox churches he is often called Julian the Gout-Sufferer.
To that same notice, add this link to a view of Julian suffering death by burning (in this case, flames replace the actual agent of his burning, quicklime) as depicted in the earlier fourteenth-century frescoes (betw. 1313 and 1318; conservation work in 1968) by Michael Astrapas and Eutychios in the church of St. George at Staro Nagoričane in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia:

Further to Gregory of Narek:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the link to a second depiction of him in Yerevan, Matenadaran, ms. 1568 no longer functions. Use this instead:

To the same notice add this link to a view of Gregory (at left) as depicted in a late fourteenth-century copy (dated 1391) from Akdamar /Aghtamar of his _Book of Lamentation_ (Yerevan, Matenadaran, ms. 1874):

Further to Luke of Messina:
In that earlier post's notice of this saint, the first of the three links to closer views of the site of his monastery on the Punta San Ranieri in Messina's harbor no longer functions. Use this instead:
