To the LIS-LINK Community,

 

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that our friend and
colleague Phil Coles has passed away.  Phil suffered a brain aneurism on
Friday 17th February which proved fatal.  Phil leaves behind his wife
Wendi and sons, Peter and Matthew.

 

Phil has worked for OCLC since 2007, only a small part then of a
distinguished career that has spanned 35 years of working primarily with
academic and special libraries.  This time included working at
Blackwell's library bookselling and subscription agency divisions,
BookData (subsequently Nielsen BookData) and Dynix (subsequently
SirsiDynix).

 

We have today received this message from Phil's son Peter that he has
given me permission to share with this list.

 

"Thank you all so much for your kind sentiments which we have found
extremely touching at this really difficult time. We knew that Phil was
well liked, but the messages coming in have made us realise that he was
also really loved. 

 

The funeral will take place at Oxford Crematorium in St. Johns Chapel,
on the 5th March 2012, at 12:00 noon. 

 

The crematorium can be found just outside Headington at:

 

Bayswater Road, Headington, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX3 9RZ

 

After the funeral there will be a reception at Thomley Hall Activity
Centre (http://thomleyactivitycentre.org/) which will be begin around
14:00 pm. You can find Thomley Hall at:    

 

Menmarsh Road, Worminghall, Buckinghamshire, HP18 9JZ

 

The funeral and the reception will be open to non-family members as we
know how many of Phil's colleagues want to pay their respects. 

 

We also have one small request: Phil was not one for keeping a personal
diary unless it was work related! And so, we were wondering whether it
would be possible, if you have the time, to write a small paragraph
about the most memorable experience that you had with him? It does not
have to be very long, but we would love to hear any stories you have
about Phil so we can tell future generations of Coles's more about him.
You can send your message as a reply to this email or bring it in person
to the funeral."

 

Of course, I am more than happy to pass along messages of condolence to
Phil's family.
