Dear all,
A few weeks ago I posed a few questions about items interloaned between libraries marked not for photocopying. Here are the scintillating results:
Number of organisations responding: 18
1) For loaned items supplied from your stock marked "No Photocopying Allowed", how absolute is this ruling?
22% - Absolute: We expect no photocopying of our item!
78% - We do not supply items tagged "No Photocopying Allowed"
2) Do you differentiate between photocopying of ILL loaned items by End Users and ILL staff?
22% - No Exceptions: We would be cross if our Do Not Photocopy items are copied by anyone
6% - Any: We would trust students or ILL staff to photocopy items (if permitted by exceptions/guidelines)
72% - N/a
(one assumes the Absolute people and No Exceptions are the same folks!)
Comment highlights
-"I've said we don't ever supply anything with this condition. However there might be exceptions with Theses."
-"We only ever mark theses 'no photocopying allowed'"
-"We tend not to send books marked as "no photocopying", if it's that fragile then we would probably not trust it to the mercies of the post in the first place."
-"When we receive items labelled thus, I do doubt the legal justification (unless we actually sign a receipt to that effect in which case we take the view that we are contractually bound)"
-"I do often find that if I phone up ILL staff who have placed this restriction on an item they are happy for my staff to copy the item for the user."
Conclusions:
If it says Do Not Photocopy, then Do Not Photocopy by ILL staff or student alike applies; but it's always worth asking just in case there's some leniency as not all items appear to be equal in restriction.
My thanks to all whom responded
Gareth
