Hello Pete
I have undertaken some FG's with cyclists for the visions2030 project, if chatting over the phone about approach, protocol would help, then more than happy to oblige ([log in to unmask])
I think its important to remember that there's no such thing as the perfect focus group, because its real world research (unlike a lab) and FG's work well as a complementary approach to other data gathering techniques, so the knack is not just to rely on FG's to inform your data analysis.

Pete,
I would suggest you actually contact a social scientist and have him/her and you lead the discussion, having had couple of discussions regarding contents and method, etc. I've done this many times but I'm in Bogotá and all my work and reports are in Spanish. It has worked perfectly when I've organized it that way (however, I am by training a social scientist and by practice a transportation "expert").
Happy to help in anything needed!
Best regards,

I've read the theory, but I think it'd be very interesting to actually watch someone else facilitate a group. I'll happily be the note-taker and second observer, if that helps.
