1st Call for papers: 'Meet the Editors' Event
BISA-ISA Conference, Edinburgh, 20-22 June 2012

After organizing a successful 'meet the editors' event at last year's
BISA conference, the BISA Post-Graduate Network are on public demand
organizing another of these events at the joint conference of the
British International Studies Association (BISA) and the International
Studies Association (ISA) in Edinburgh on 20-22 June 2012.

The event will include one open session, scheduled for 4-5.30pm on
Wednesday 20 June 2012. This will consist of a number of journal
editors briefly presenting their journals and how they deal with
submissions, as well as taking questions from the audience.  This is a
great way to demystify the submission and editorial processes, and we
have found the discussion to be lively and productive.

This will be followed by a number of closed workshops throughout the
duration of the conference, which focus on improving the quality of
potential journal submissions. The purpose of the closed-session
workshops is for post-graduates and early career researchers to
receive feedback on draft articles, which will be considered in terms
of their 'fit' and level of development. Submissions will be allocated
to journals in groups of 3 or 4. The finished papers are then
circulated to the presenters and editors, before being discussed in
small groups or 4 or 5 people, so that the editor(s) critique and
engage with the papers, and the other participants also present
critical feedback.  Both editors and presenters have found this
process to be constructive and helpful.

Advanced postgraduate students and early career researchers are hereby
invited to submit paper proposals for the closed-session workshops.
This would involve submitting a complete draft paper by 1st June,
which would then be reviewed by one of the participating journals with
discussion of the drafts (attendance limited to those who have
submitted papers). It is therefore an invaluable opportunity to get
detailed feedback direct from journal editors.

The workshops arise from recent discussions in international studies,
focusing on concerns from editors that they get a high volume of
submissions, but that many are poor quality, and concomitantly,
concerns from younger scholars that it is very hard to get published.
Papers submitted to the workshops can be on any topic relating to
international studies.

Spaces are limited, and applications are due by 1st April 2012 to
Astrid Nordin at [log in to unmask] Applications
should include a title and abstract of your paper, what year of your
PhD/post-doc you are in, and contact details of your supervisor.

Best wishes,
Astrid Nordin, Executive member of the BISA Post-Graduate Network, organiser
Sara Dorman, Joint Editor of African Affairs, supporting organiser
