You could insist that the images you supply have 'sample' or 'specimen'
lightly overprinted on the cover. Thereby protecting against facsimile
covers being produced?

The museum has received a request from a book dealer/ seller about
photographing some of the front covers from our collection, they wish to
use them to send to foriegn book sellers etc. so they know what to look out
for, (see message below)
I have a naturally suspisious mind, but would need a good reason to refuse
their request - I wondered if there were any ethical reasons why we should
refuse. The Museum's name would not be included in anything linked to the
finished images - so I don't see it being a potential 'stolen to order'
threat.
On the other hand this could be a perfectly legitamate and reasonable
request that other museum may have received - I would be grateful for
advise/ people's experience
Thank you
Nicola

Dear Pat Hurry,
We spoke on 13 December last year when I asked you if my wife and I could
come up to Bedford with a camera and photograph some of your Bunyans in
obscure languages. We want to do this because we're assembling a large
collection of English Literature Published Abroad and find that if we tell
overseas booksellers what we want, they sometimes find it hard to grasp
the concept but if we show them a sample book they get it immediately!
I attach one of the circulars detailing our needs.
When we spoke you said that you could probably help although you were
having some restoration work done in February 2012.
Here is a list of the 28 items the title-pages of which we'd like to take
the photos. Numbers refer to the 3rd Edition of the John Bunyan Museum
Library Catalogue.
We'd be happy to pay whatever fee you think appropriate. Perhaps you could
suggest a fw days that would be suitable for you - we are pretty flexible
except that Thursdays are not so good.
Best wishes,
Chris Kohler
