We're finding him quite amusing here too, though of course very curious to know who's behind it...

I'd suggest *not* asking @Henry_Wellcome on Twitter - https://twitter.com/#!/Henry_Wellcome/statuses/159642047438000129

This twitter feed is a huge laugh for anyone on here who hasn't encountered him yet ;)

Subject: Archive Classification Scheme

Please help an amateur!

At Dartmouth museum we are about to classify a whole cupboard of random papers and photographs. None of this has been classified or archived before, though a start was made on other items by a late volunteer. The details of the classification scheme he used appear to have died with him (though this may prove incorrect and we may yet discover its documentation).

Is anyone able to share with me a simple scheme they use with success to classify collections such as our cupboard, please?

My wife is starting to scope the task and her thoughts with no prior experience are along the lines of some sort of quasi-hierarchical number scheme like

Year-classified(dot)class-of-item(dot)overall-unique-number

The artefacts will be located, probably, in a filing scheme available for booked public access. Space doesn't allow us to display more than a small fraction of what we have.

We want to do two things!

1) Keep it simple
2) Document what has been done so the scheme doesn't die with us!
