I was wondering if you could help identify a headless statue which was
found in Chichester Harbour? There is hot debate amongst my colleagues
as to whether this is Roman or Medieval, and a saint or sword-bearing
figure, e.g. from the Crusades. Any ideas would be gratefully received!!
Images of the figure can be viewed here:
The decoration is carved on three sides (not the back, which is plain)
and there seems to be traces of faint lettering across the bottom front
of the piece, but this is difficult to make out. The statue is granite,
but not local to Chichester....thoughts are that it might be French or
Look forward to hearing what you think!
