***** The Army Hitler Forgot - The story of the Women's Voluntary Services in the Home Front in WWII ******
WRVS has today (17th January) launched a set of free online resources for Key Stage 2 and 3 History teachers.
Using sources drawn from the WRVS's UNESCO award winning Archive & Heritage Collection, the resources focus on the work of the million plus women who were members of the Women's Voluntary Services (WVS) during WWII. The army Hitler forgot.
The WVS was in many respects 'the Home Front', providing for the defence of the civilian population through the worst of the War. They were in large part responsible for the safe evacuation of the children in September 1939, and were always on hand to help those affected by bombing and its aftermath. The organisation's unofficial motto was that it 'never said no' and its members ended up doing a myriad of small and large jobs, from collecting salvage, to darning socks for the army, or providing vegetables and comforts for merchant seamen. The WVS was always on hand with a cup of tea or 286,000!
Through the use of primary documents, photographs and posters of the time, these resources bring the reality of being a WVS volunteer to life and fill a significant gap in resources about the WWII Home Front.
The resources are available free at www.wrvs.org.uk/schools
