Measurement uncertainty & statistical error
4-6pm on 7 February 2012
Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol Street, London EC1Y 8LX
This meeting, organised by the Business & Industrial Section of the Royal Statistical Society, will comprise the following talks:
An overview of Measurement Uncertainty
This talk will consider the GUM (Guide to the expression of measurement uncertainty), which was first published in 1993, and other documents that are the responsibility of the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology. The GUM is now undergoing revision to take account of recent developments.
Current numerical methods
An intro to the numerical methods currently in use for MU estimation; these include a few gradient methods (including a spread sheet method), Monte Carlo and MCMC for Bayesian methods.
Measurement error
This is important in all manufacturing companies, but it is treated very differently in different sectors. Traditionally the chemical industry has focussed on the difference that is likely to arise when customer and supplier attempt to measure the quality or quantity of a consignment, whereas the engineering industries have focused on the variation that arises when many components are measured and how much of this variation is due to measurement error. The two approaches do not use identical vocabulary and where they use the same word it may have different meanings. There is ample scope for confusion.
Speakers:
Maurice Cox has lead editorial responsibility for the revision of the GUM. He chairs several related BSI and ISO committees.
Steve Ellison is head of IT & Training at LGC and has been teaching measurement uncertainty for over 15 years.
Roland Caulcutt is a very experienced statistical consultant who has trained six-sigma black-belts in both the chemical and engineering industries. He has lectured in three universities and written several books in applied statistics.
