EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. In addition to facing Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings
and the rest of the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, the Giants will also be
forced to battle paresthesia, bronchoconstriction and a persistent though
not necessarily overwhelming sensation that they have to urinate.
.
Such is life at Lambeau Field, where the frequently frigid weather
inspires fear in some fans and loathing in players who believe, as Giants
punter Steve Weatherford said, that its just a really, really tough place
to play.
.
That much is certain. But as the Giants prepare to face the Packers in a
divisional round playoff game that will probably be played in temperatures
in the 20s a typical January day in Wisconsin it seems important to
explore what, exactly, happens to a players body in such conditions.
.
From a physiological standpoint, experts said, playing in extreme cold
generally affects a players vascular system and his respiratory system in
other words, the ability to feel and his ability to breathe.
.
On the coldest days, I have to stand and put my hands by the heaters,
Giants center David Baas said. Otherwise I cant feel my fingertips when I
snap the ball.
.
That loss of feeling, said Adam Bennett, a primary care sports medicine
physician and team doctor for the Chicago Bears, is related the bodys
natural inclination to protect its most vital parts. Essentially, the body
is more concerned with keeping Eli Mannings liver or kidneys or heart
functioning properly than with ensuring that his fingers are supple enough
to throw a screen pass with just the right amount of touch.
