Data and Statistics

http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/professionals/data/index.html

.

.

Assessment of current levels of physical activity and inactivity is
critical for defining the extent of the problem, guiding public health
efforts, and evaluating progress toward national health objectives. A
survey examines public health issues by asking a sample of the population
about their health and lifestyles. The prevalence of health conditions or
behaviors in a population is measured using survey data. A surveillance
system is a series of surveys conducted again and again, monitoring
long-term trends in public health. A surveillance system is used to
examine public health issues across several years; to track the trends,
compare health among groups of people, and determine whether something is
improving or worsening for a specific group of people.

Explanation of US Physical Activity Surveys

Several different national surveys track physical activity in many age
groups and at several levels for the United States national public health
objectives. This section provides background information understanding and
comparing the various physical activity surveys.

.

CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)

The BRFSS uses a population-based telephone survey to assess behavioral
health risk factors of American adults since 1984. The BRFSS provides
national and state data.

.

National Health Interview Survey (NHIS)

The NHIS is a household survey based at the National Center for Health
Statistics (NCHS) that has used household interviews to provide national
health statistics since 1957. Baseline statistics for Healthy People 2010
objectives and for the Leading Indicators for physical activity for adults
come from this survey.

.

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

NHANES provides statistics about the health of Americans through a
combination of personal interviews and direct physical examinations.

.

CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)

YRBSS monitors priority health risk behaviors that contribute markedly to
the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth
and adults in the United States. The YRBSS includes national, state, and
local school-based surveys of representative samples of 9th through 12th
grade students.

Active Environments

http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/professionals/environment/index.html

.

Interest in environmental and policy strategies to promote physical
activity has grown over the last few years and there is now a growing body
of evidence supporting such approaches. Environmental and policy
approaches may be especially important as they can benefit all people
exposed to the environment rather than focusing on changing physical
activity behavior one person at a time. Strategies often include providing
access to facilities and programs not currently available and supporting
social environments that favor activities. Examples include walking and
bicycle trails, funding for public facilities, zoning and land use that
facilitates activity in neighborhoods, mall walking programs, and building
construction that encourages physical activity. Such approaches hold
particular promise for promoting physical activity and should be taken
into account in the design of physical activity interventions. The links
below provide public health, community design and related sites that
complement Active Community Environments (ACES) efforts.

What is social marketing? Why use social marketing? CDC Social Marketing
Resources Other Social Marketing Resources and Links Social Marketing for
Nutrition and Physical Activity Web Course

This course provides training for public health professionals about how
to use social marketing to plan nutrition, physical activity, and obesity
prevention programs.

.

What is social marketing?

One traditional definition of social marketing is

.

"The application of commercial marketing technologies to the analysis,
planning, execution, and evaluation of programs designed to influence
voluntary behavior of target audiences in order to improve their personal
welfare and that of society."

Andreasen, AR. Marketing Social Change: Changing Behavior to Promote
Health, Social Development, and the Environment. San Francisco, CA:
Jossey-Bass; 1995.

.

A commercial marketer looks for ways to convince customers to purchase a
product. Similarly, a social marketer tries to influence the behavior of a
target audience.

.

Why use social marketing?

Social marketing can be thought of as a mindset used in planning and
partnership development, or a structured and strategic planning process.
It can be used to influence the behavior of individuals or the behavior of
policymakers and influential persons for policy and environmental changes.

.

The structured planning process allows you to make well-informed decisions
about what audiences to target, what are their specific needs, and how you
can meet those needs. The development of programs or products to
effectively change behavior can be accomplished by understanding your
audience.

.

The process for social marketing planning is described in the Division for
Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesitys Social Marketing for Nutrition
and Physical Activity Web course and CDCynergy: Social Marketing.
