These stones are mentally soldiers murdered
where lost energy dropped them, pattern elsewhere.
This is meaningless once made metaphorical.
Pointlessness too in seeing what’s mute muted.
A cut off decaying dolphin, far across,
becomes sheet polythene and bags left there
or blown here together, half-buried,
sand giving resemblance of broken body.
Near up, one sees inside and through the corpse,
miniature urns of air and small jetsam,
nothing much else; and of itself nothing.
Also, a smash-limbed trunk, one end narrowed --
a fence post? maybe, yet roughly so;
more like a creature of imagination.
