medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
I'm transcribing a single folio that has ended up in a village parish chuch over here. The folio obviously served as a book cover. It bears Sarum breviary readings for the feast of Thomas the Apostle, Fabian and Sebastian, and the Conversion of Paul. These feasts are early in the sanctoral cycle.
I"m wondering what the simplest way would be for a medieval/early modern person to recycle vellum folios from a book. I am imagining this would be by opening the book to its most central folio, cut the strings of the quire, and use the uppermost folio for covering Book Number One, the subsequent folio for Book Number Two, etc.
If this was indeed the 'normal' way to recycle vellum for bookbinding purposes, I am guessing that there might be extant some medieval manuscript books that someone had begun to recycle, but, for whatever reason, got discarded or set aside and then forgotten. Does anyone know of any such partial books that remain to us?
Best wishes, George
