medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: suydam <[log in to unmask]>
> This seems unnecessarily mean-spirited given that Marjorie was
volunteering to start a new medium for us. You may not like the idea
but to call her a "list mommie" seems over the top.
and would be, if she were one --or even aspired to be one.
she does, however, aspire to be a FaceBook Mommie.
which is different.
George is the Long-Suffering ListMommie i was referring to.
>I personally like the idea of facebook.
Different Strokes, i suppose.
>It has a lot of possibilities that the straight e-list doesn't have. And you
can read it straight from your phone just as easily as email as there is a
very handy facebook app. We could actually have an archive of those amazing
photos and much more easy to access.
so, start your own FaceBook list.
you can be the List Mommie (if it's o.k. with Marjorie --you guys work it out
between you, whatever you decide will be Jake with me).
>I don't know what jiscmail is
just some sort of antiquated 20th c. technology, i believe.
>but it can't be as ubiquitous as Facebook.
thankfully, no it can't.
which brings up a good point worth considering:
right now the list, while certainly not "exclusive," does require the
expenditure of a *minimal* effort to find and sign up to.
i believe that this is an advantage --it is a kind of (very rudimentary)
filter, serving to keep out some of the hoi and also the peloi who infest
FaceBook, et all, and perhaps one that fosters a degree of "seriousness" (for
lack of a better word).
the idea of the kids i ride the bus home with every day --about half with
their iPads out-- "chatting" on Med-Rel makes me, for one, Shudder.
i submit that turning the "medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of
medieval religion and culture" list into a FaceBook chat room has *no* upside
at all, and a considerable DownSide.
as a very Wise Woeman once said, "If it ain't Broke..." etc.
>Facebook is hardly a new fad by the way,
well, it's *pretty* "new"
shucks, i can remember a time when it didn't even exist --Pathetic Fogey that
i am.
>so it's not like we would be going into uncharted waters.
no, the chart is pretty clear: in that direction There Be Reefs.
>Most organizations have Facebook pages now. Why can't we?
Viday Soupra.

btw, Mary, is the dissertation of my old professor, Dayton Phillips, still
read in Beguine circles these daze?
is it very highly thought of?
he was a very, very good teacher --who didn't publish much of anything (worked
on a book on Petrarch for 20-30 years, but never finished it)-- and i've
always wondered about his book on the Beguines of Strasbourg.
