I immediately thought of an Aristotelian connection, too. I can't help noticing, too, how it might be connected to some of the Christological heresies, e.g., the Monophysites or Nestorians (which would seem apropos to the Canticle of Mary).

Sounds like the long shadow of Aristotle, which took many forms as it 
worked its way to Arabic philosophers (e.g. Avicenna) and Aquinas.
