Hi Tim!
I've just come across quite a good description of how to set up and
organise a Museum numbering scheme (pdf).
http://museumsoftware.com/download/pp4-5.pdf
Apparently it's aimed at the users of some piece of museum software
called Past Perfect ... which I know absolutely nothing about ... but
its explanation of things like the joys of three-section accession
numbering would also seem to be relevant to doing similar things on
other systems, or on spreadsheets, or whatever.

None of this has been classified or archived before, though a start was made on other items by a late volunteer. The details of the classification scheme he used appear to have died with him (though this may prove incorrect and we may yet discover its documentation).
