Colleagues,
The Nansen Award Secretariat would like to encourage you to identify and nominate inspiring and deserving candidates for the 2012 Nansen Refugee Award.
Since Eleanor Roosevelt was named the first laureate in 1954, the Nansen Refugee Award has been conferred upon individuals and organisations who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication in their work on behalf of refugees. The award, named after the late Norwegian polar explorer and first High Commissioner for Refugees Fridtjof Nansen, was established by UNHCR to publicly recognize the work of extraordinary humanitarians and to draw international attention to issues of concern to refugees and displaced people.
The Award is accompanied by a monetary prize of US$ 100,000, donated by the Governments of Norway and Switzerland. The prize funds a project to assist forcibly displaced people or to advocate for the refugee cause. In October, the winner is honored at a televised ceremony in Geneva, at which the laureate’s work is highlighted by well-known musicians and video tributes.
This year, once again, we seek to identify and reward deserving individuals, groups or organisations whose work has had an impact on the lives of refugees, internally displaced or stateless people. Anyone who has demonstrated perseverance and courage or who personally, directly and significantly helps forcibly displaced people would be a strong nominee.
To nominate a candidate for the 2012 Nansen Refugee Award, request a Nomination package at http://www.nansenaward.org, simply complete the Nansen Nomination form, and then send it to the Nansen Committee Secretariat by email or mail ([log in to unmask]). The strongest nominations will include detailed accounts of the candidate’s work and strong references to back up the submission.
The deadline for submissions of nominations for the 2011 Nansen Refugee Award is 29 February 2012. Nominations forms and questions should be directed to the Nansen Secretariat at [log in to unmask]
Thank you.
