To an outsider, film theory, in its broadest sense - the theorising of film
- appears to be in terrific shape because of recent contributions from
philosophers. I'm thinking of the steady displacement of so-called,
contemporary film theory or Film Theory (including such concepts as suture)
by the work done in the philosophy of film (cognitive film theory; Carroll,
Wartenberg) and film-philosophy (Cavellian, Deleuzian; Mulhall, Mullarkey,
Sinnerbrink).
A comment, with trepidation, from Africa.

Subject: Re: [FILM-PHILOSOPHY] Off-space
Directly related to off-screen space is the 1970's theory of suture.
Recently, Slavoj Zizek has lamented the 'demise' of this concept in film
theory, arguing that it is indicative of the latter's decline more
generally. Any opinions on this?
Happy New Year,
Henry
