Hi Henry & all, interesting about a film's meaning[supposedly] being shown
in the 1st 5 minutes of it! The Ghost Writer is one of my fave grim films.
Think the gist of it is partially summarised in the conversation about
'heart' selling autobiographies. Heart is the thing that Adam Lang, under
the influence of his Lady Macbeth wife, has lacked through his political
career that he tries to cover up!
The lack of heart is also seen is the beautiful rainy blue/grey seascapes
with the occasional harsh lights; minimalistic decor of Lang beach home &
elegance of the Emmett mansion in fairytale wicked woods. Not many cheerful
colors in this film. Of course, Polanski is well known for his use of grim
colours particularly in the Tenant. Hope this might help you, Best, Ange
