The XperiencWeb presents a new research challenge with core
focus on a user's 'experience' seeking goals and problem solving as opposed
to a user's 'information' seeking goals and information access.
Such a direction is necessary given the transformative nature of the web from a
document centric to an experience centric medium where unprecedented volumes
of social media data and content repositories call for novel extraction,
representation, retrieval and reuse strategies for problem solving
and reasoning tasks. Typical examples of experiential content include HowTo
web services such as StackOverflow, recommendation sites such as TripAdvisor and
trails of experiential interactions captured at sites such as Quora,
Yahoo answers, Twitter, Facebook and Delicious. Unique to such content
are descriptions of problem situations often combined with reflective
narratives consisting of decisions made, lessons learnt and/or opinions expressed.
This forms a rich source of untapped experience data - an integral
resource for reasoning from the wisdom of the crowds; a resource that can be
exploited for problem-solving tasks.
Accordingly the workshop aims to provide a forum to identify research
opportunities and challenges in the use of web-related experience data specifically:
- to enable better capture and representation of unstructured experiential web content;
- to enable reuse of experiential content to help with problem-solving tasks;
- to harness web usage experiences to improve browsing and search;
- to showcase applications which use experiential content in novel and innovative ways;
- to address How to or Why like queries as opposed to simple keyword based queries; and
- to allow integration of information and interaction for reasoning tasks.
Submission Topics

Reasoning with web content requires interdisciplinary tools to author web
experience along with novel indexing and reasoning schemes that
go beyond link analysis and exploit folksonomies as well as ontologies.
Additionally, retrieving and reusing these experiences will require combination techniques
to aggregate knowledge extracted from text, multimedia, user content and user interactions.
This calls for hybrid approaches that draw from, and extend, research in a number of
related areas including Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), Information Retrieval (IR),
Information Extraction (IE), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP),
Text Mining, Recommender Systems and adaptive user interfaces.
Topics will include, but not be limited to, addressing the following:
How to harness web experiential content for reasoning tasks
How to transform the web from a medium of content sharing to a medium of content reuse.
How to express a user's experience need
How to extract, analyse and compare people's web experiential content
How to visualise experiential content
How to discover and utilise issues of provenance
How to capture and exploit user interaction for web search and browsing
How to combine information and interaction episodes for better task execution
How to evaluate systems that interface with social/web data
How to use people/community as a resource for effective problem solving
How to deal with noise and inconsistent knowledge (e.g. argumentation analysis)
How to use conversation as a medium for queries and recommendations
How to manage and use folksonomies for problem solving tasks
How to integrate and use web resources
How to filter and recommend web/social content using experiential knowledge
How to quantify relevance when dealing with experiential content
Format and Submission
---------------------
Workshop papers should be submitted using the
ACM template http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates,
which is the format required for the final camera-ready copy, with a maximum
of 10 pages for full papers and 4 pages for short (position, demonstration) papers.
