With regard to mainstreaming (whatever that term encompasses ...) - personally I would not purchase a, bespoke, Kindle device.
Much better to stick to a versatile mainstream (Microsoft) Windows, Android or Apple device - as the Kindle 'App' is now available as a free download for each of the following:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423913 (Kindle for PC)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423873 (Kindle for Android)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423903 (Kindle for iPhone)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000423883 (Kindle for iPad)
[ Apparently it is possible to run Run Kindle for PC in Linux with WINE - see:

Do not forget:
http://calibre-ebook.com/ (eBook/eNewspaper Downloader, Converter & Reader available for Windows, Apple OS X & Linux)
... which is an interesting alternative (thanks for pointing that out Katja).
It should also be noted that, should it be required, only Windows and Android devices support single switch access.
Be aware that it is exceedingly unlikely that any Apple device will ever support single-switch access as this would violate Apple's security model (no App is allowed to access another App - except the ones allowed by Apple).
