1.1 Research in Learning Technology is now Open Access
On January 1 2012 our journal Research in Learning Technology became an
Open Access journal. As a result the last 19 Volumes are freely
available at the journal's new web site

2.2 The ALT/ELN webinar schedule for 2012

Both webinars *will* run, but they will *not* run on the previously

2.3 Flowing from October’s meeting of all four of ALT’s Operational
Committees, several events are now in the pipeline including:
* a one-day event about large-scale curriculum redesign modelled on last
June’s successful Lecture Capture conference

particularly (but not exclusively) FE;
* an event for learning technology researchers and research managers,
with the working title “Getting to grips with impact in the learning
technology field”.

3.1 Michael Gove on technology in learning
The final section of Michael Gove's 1/12/2011 speech to the Schools
Network conference - from "Digital networks" onwards - has some
interesting pointers to Government thinking on technology in the schools

3.2 LSE's "Using Twitter in university research, teaching and impact
activities"
LSE has produced a new twitter guide for academics and researchers,
written by Amy Mollett, Danielle Moran and Patrick Dunleavy. For more

3.3 ALT Sponsoring Member ULCC has released a new “e-ILP” community version
With the release of Moodle 2.0, ULCC took the decision to review the
existing code and implement a new e-ILP (Individual Learning Plan) that
was more flexible and extensible to anticipate existing and future needs
of the systems. Benefits of the e-ILP module, like improved learner
engagement, retention and achievement as well as cost savings associated
with a well integrated IT solution, have since been mentioned in Ofsted
reports and JISC papers. Full details about the latest version of the

3.4 Medill Northwestern University webcasts students' journalism and
technology projects
ALT Sponsoring Member Sonic Foundry's Mediasite webcasting platform has
been used by Medill Northwestern University in Chicago to showcase media
tools students have created. For its journalism and technology classes,
Medill webcasts student presentations to the public. This quarter 19
students created five one-of-a-kind news apps, such as TwitterDebate
which pulls opposing tweets of the current presidential candidates on
various topics. Students most recently gave presentations on November 30
and the archived Mediasite recording can be found at

4.1 Futures for Knowledge, Follow the Sun 2012 online conference, 28-30
March
Follow the Sun is a 48 hour global online conference co-hosted by Beyond
Distance Research Alliance, UK, Australian Digital Futures Institute,

4.2 HEA Workshop: Making the Most of Open Data in Education Studies, 27
Jan 2012
A full-day hands-on workshop at Liverpool John Moores University, on
combining open data with easy-to-use visualisation tools for enhancement
of Education Studies courses. The morning session will introduce
developments in 'open and linked data' and review sources and types of
data that could be incorporated into classroom practice. In the
afternoon, participants will be supported in developing a simple 'linked
data' application for use in their own teaching. A closing plenary will
review what has been achieved, considering how best to exploit available
resources and embed these in participants own practices.

4.3 Learning from OER Research Projects
This workshop will consider the types of OER projects that have been
funded and how these have contributed to the evolution of what OER is
today. It will consider evidence of the effect that OER is having on
the Higher Education Sector and how this is impacting on the changing
face of Higher Education in England, and more broadly in the UK and

4.6 David White gives update on Visitors and Residents
David White from the University of Oxford will deliver an update on the
JISC-funded Visitors & Residents project at OCLC’s two-day conference,
developing a New Brand of Library, in Birmingham on 28th and 29th
February 2012. For those who are looking for a broad picture of learner
motivations, the Visitors & Residents research project, partnered by
OCLC, is a welcome development. The project’s focus on
information-gathering behaviours dovetails with the conference theme –
how physical and digital spaces blend to meet the needs of today’s

4.7 Learning from OER Research Projects
This workshop on 19th January 2012 at the Open University will consider
what can be learned from the OER Impact Study, the synthesis and
evaluation of the JISC OER phase 1 and 2 projects and OLnet, to
highlight what research shows us about stakeholder engagement and the
reasons for it, lessons learnt, and what the movement can do and is
doing, going forward.

4.9 Learning Technology for Education in Cloud (LTEC'12)
In conjunction with KMO '12 Conference and International Symposium on
Management Intelligent Systems, 11 -13 July, 2012 in Salamanca, Spain.

latest research in learning technology and its impacts for learners and

5.2 The International Journal of Learning Technology (IJLT) seeks papers
in 2012
IJLT is an international, refereed, scholarly journal providing an
interdisciplinary forum for the presentation and discussion of important
ideas, concepts, and exemplars that can deeply influence the role of
learning technologies in learning and instruction. This unique and
dynamic journal focuses on the epistemological thrust of learning
vis-à-vis instruction and the technologies and tools that support the
process. IJLT publishes papers related to theoretical foundations,
design and implementation, and effectiveness and impact issues related
to learning technologies.

6.1 JISC Grant Funding 18/11: OER Rapid Innovation
The JISC and the Higher Education Academy (HEA) invite eligible
institutions to submit funding proposals for Projects to enhance digital

6.2 JISC Grant Funding 19/11: Transformations Programme
The JISC invite eligible institutions to submit bids to participate in
the JISC Transformations Programme. The objective of the Transformations
Programme is to help institutions move towards organisational change
through the application of existing JISC and other resources in order to:
*Enhance their student experience;
*Improve the efficiency of their business and become agile in a climate
of change;
*Enhance their organisational capability for business and community
engagement;

6.3 JISC Grant Funding 20/11: Embedding impact analysis in research
using BCE practitioners - Second Round
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) invites institutions to
submit funding proposals for partnership projects to embed good practice
in impact analysis in research departments utilising the expertise of
Business and Community Engagement practitioners and information
management specialists. Funding of up to £30,000 per project is
available to support three-way collaborative partnerships comprising:
*Research groups seeking to develop their capabilities in analysing and
articulating the impact and benefits of their research;
*Business and Community Engagement (BCE) practitioners with expertise in
identifying external impact and benefits, and designing institutional
services for this purpose;
*Leading research information management expertise and resources for
impact evidence.
