Happy New Year! This seems a perfect time to update you on the work of the HEEON Steering Group since September and to ask for your feedback and suggestions for 2012.
We’ve focussed on progressing the recommendations of our biennial review of June 2011 and members’ comments. We’ve
• agreed HEEON’s strapline: 'working together for equality in Higher Education'
• updated our flyer, website and information for new members
• updated our members’ database and secured membership fees
• made it easier for you to book and pay for conferences
• agreed how HEEON will work more closely with AUA and the Leadership Foundation.
On representation, the SG has responded to consultations on:
• the REF
• QAA’s guidance on working with international students
• HESA’s proposed changes to the student record.
Patrick Johnson, Moira Mitchell and I have met with Mark Hammond, CEO of the EHRC, and, this week, with Amy Norton and Fariba Dashtgard Soetan who are the equality leads at HEFCE. We’ve gained a good sense of the impact of developments at the Commission and the Funding Council, shared the perspectives of practitioners and also raised the profile of HEEON. I will be reporting more on this during this year's AGM which will be held on 14th June during our residential conference.
This year’s January conference: ‘Eliminating the needle from the haystack – meeting the new equality specific duties,’ provides top key speakers, workshops and networking opportunities to help us meet the Equality Duty at a time of fundamental change in the higher education sector. This event is being held on Monday 23rd January in London and you can still book your place at: http://www.heeon.ac.uk/events.htm or by contacting Michele Lefevre, HEEON’s administrator/membership secretary [log in to unmask]
It will be great to see you at the conference, so if there’s anything you want to find out more about, or suggest, please talk to any of the Steering Group members there. Our next SG meeting is on 6 February, when we shall be discussing proposals for the HEEON website and planning the June residential conference, which will be held on 13th & 14th June at Scarman, University of Warwick. Please let me know if you’ve any suggestions on these or other matters for the SG.
With my best wishes for 2012.
