Applicants are sought to fill an NSF supported post doctoral research position in the group of Jane Hinch at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA. The post is initially for one year but is renewable thereafter, upon mutual consent. The research focuses on characterizing the self assembly, ordering, and dynamics of small amino acid adsorbates on coinage (Cu, Au, Ag) metal faces. The studies are to utilize elastic diffraction and inelastic scattering of He atoms from the hydrogen bonded networks of glycine, alanine, proline, and other small amino acids in self assembled superstructures. The intrinsic chiralities of many ordered phases are to be investigated with the highly surface-sensitive diffraction technique. The kinetics of self-assembly energies will be apparent in reflectivity measurements and the contributions of hydrogen bonding in vibrational dynamics. Longer term aims include the development of stable chiral surfaces for heterogeneous enantiomer-selective catalysis. 

The project is in close collaboration also with Prof. Steve Jenkins, Cambridge University, UK. The UK group has a strong theoretical team, working on calculations of the dynamics of adsorbed amino acids, as well as an experimental group with extensive experience in self assembly of amino acids. Joint projects will involve the short term exchange of personnel between groups; international travel is to be anticipated. 

Helium atom scattering is a powerful spectroscopic tool which is often considered to be the surface analog of neutron diffraction. In addition we have UHV STM and FTIR facilities. The project involves sophisticated UHV instrumentation and lends itself to those with both physical and chemical interests. Prospective candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or an appropriate engineering field, have UHV experience, and be familiar with many basic surface science methods. Prior experience in STM, FTIR, XPS and/or NEXAFS techniques will be looked upon favorably. The applicant must be an independent researcher, and yet be able to work as part of a research team including Ph.D. and undergraduate students, and departmental staff. The position is available immediately, and high priority will be given to qualified candidates who are available for work at earlier dates.
