Post-doctoral Research Biostatisticians: Expressions of Interest sought
Victorian Centre for Biostatistics (ViCBiostat)
Expressions of interest are invited for a number of post-doctoral
appointments that will be offered by a new Centre for research in
biostatistics, which is being established in Melbourne with funding for
five years from Australia's National Health & Medical Research Council
(NHMRC). ViCBiostat is a collaborative venture led by researchers at the
Murdoch Children's Research Institute (Prof John Carlin and A/Prof
Michael Coory), the Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine at
Monash University (Prof Andrew Forbes and A/Prof Rory Wolfe), and the
Centre for Molecular Environmental, Genetic & Analytical Epidemiology
(MEGA) at The University of Melbourne (A/Prof Lyle Gurrin and A/Prof
Julie Simpson). We are in the process of creating an academic centre for
biostatistics research and training across our three locations.
Appointments at post-doctoral level will form the core workforce of this
centre, with the broad aim of ViCBiostat being to foster the careers of
a new generation of biostatistical leaders, around an integrated program
of methodological and collaborative research. We are looking for
individuals with a PhD in statistics or a closely related discipline who
are seeking to develop a career as a biostatistical methodologist in
health and medical research. You should be able to demonstrate a
capacity for methodological research and have strong statistical and
mathematical skills as well as evidence of ability to work both
independently and as a member of a research team.
The work program will be developed flexibly to meet the interests and
background of suitably qualified appointees, but will be based around
the following major themes:
(a) Analytical issues in cohort studies (missing data problems;
longitudinal outcomes competing with loss to follow-up due to death;
repeated exposure measures and causal questions).
(b) Modelling of multilevel structured (correlated) data
(pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling related to antimalarial
treatment; regression models for binary outcomes from matched pairs).
(c) Development of new designs for intervention studies, in particular
cluster randomised crossover trials with application to intensive care
research.
(d) Treatment comparisons beyond head-to-head randomised trials
(propensity score analyses in end-stage renal disease; decision analytic
modelling methods for health technology and treatment evaluation).
We expect that specific positions will be advertised early in 2012, but
we are very interested to hear from suitably qualified individuals who
might be interested in joining the Centre and developing a research
program related to the themes outlined. Appointments with a duration of
2-3 years are envisaged, with salaries in the standard range for
postdoctoral fellows (A$70-90K p.a. plus superannuation).
Please email expressions of interest by 18 January to John Carlin (per
details below).
