Databases and Internet Search Tools
That are Useful for Research in Tourism

.

.

This post is shared to those interested and was written in response to a
request for guidance regarding the best search tools to be acquired by a
college to facilitate student and faculty research in the field of
tourism. I suspect these comments may be useful to others and they are
therefore shared here. These are my own opinions and observations.

.

.

The most important database to own is the British agriculture database
called CAB and published by CABI. The tourism and recreation subfile of
their database that they provide is as far as I know the most
comprehensive file. They are also the world's leading resource on human
and animal nutrition that could be useful for hospitality studies such as
restaurant food choice selections. This is available on the OVID and
EBSCOHost platforms which are better in terms of search capabilities than
their own platform. Since EBSCOHost also has the Hospitality and Tourism
Complete database, one would be able to search both simultaneously in both
are obtained via EBSCOHost.

One of the big mistakes for researchers who get beyond only searching web
Google is to think that they should only use the database in their field, say
Psychinfo for Psychology. This is very bad thinking. General databases and
databases in related fields are also very important sources for information in
ones field, in this case tourism, hospitality, recreation, and sports. Now if
one considers the compounding fact that adjectival tourism is alive and well
with many focuses in tourism that lean on other fields such as heritage tourism
(history databases) or medical tourism (medical databases) one can find much
information on tourism in social science databases, business databases like
Business Source Premier and ABI Inform as well as well as databases in
many other fields.

.

Heritage Tourism Research Guide Home Page

http://guides.temple.edu/Heritage-Tourism

.

This page linked below, at the time this check of database content for the
word tourism was done, will provide you with a sense of how widely the
content regarding tourism is diffused through academic subject fields.
One needs to choose how widely one wants to be able to search as well as
the focuses of ones tourism program, for example is it hospitality focused
with the key interests being business aspects and heritage, this will help
with database selections from other fields.

There is also this database source, frequently mentioned on the TRINET
professional and academic discussion group that is an important source of
tourism publication indexing. This is the contact information for the provider
of this tourism resource.

Finally, free search tools for the end user on the web are huge resources for
tourism information. These include Google Scholar, Google Books, SCIRUS, and
any version of Summon at a subscribing institution, we at Temple of course use
Temple Summon Search. Each is different in what it does and all need to be
used for serious or important tourism research projects and papers.

To provide comprehensive searching in the field of tourism and for that matter
in other fields as well, now and increasingly in the future, requires a very
wide range of databases and internet search services. There are specialized
tools such as Web of Science and Google Scholar that provide sources that site
a particular known publication. Google News Archive, where one can track news
stories at no institutional or end user cost as well as fee based commercial
products like Proquest, Access World News, Factiva, Dialog and others provide
full text coverage of news stories about all subjects including tourism.
Finding information in a subject discipline, in this case tourism, is no longer
a simple matter of using one or two core databases in a subject field, but
rather a maze of resources that add different pieces to a subject discipline
puzzle.

.

Furthermore an institution that invests in expensive database tools is
well advised to have database guides to publication collections in print
and online that permit access to these publications as well as tools like
Summon that show what is owned in a collection in response to topical
searches and a journal finding tool so that users can locate online and
print journals owned in the library collection. Add to this a link
resolver that shows within databases where an article can be found full
text in the home library collection as yet another important resource.
Proquest provides the Summon search tool and their Serial Solutions
subsidiary provides both a journal search tool and a link resolver as just
one example of where one can purchase these tools for the home institution
library.

.

Finally the best collection of databases will be used in a very pedestrian
fashion if serious training in their use is not provided ongoing to students
and other institutional end users.
