CONSTRUCTIVISM AND MATHEMATICS IN THE ART OF WALDEMAR CORDEIRO
An LKL Maths-Art seminar
by Fabrizio Augusto Poltronieri
Thursday 12th January 2012, 6.00 - 7.30pm
London Knowledge Lab, WC1N 3QS
Waldemar Cordeiro (1925-1973) was a Brazilian artist involved with the
concrete movement in São Paulo, that can be understood as part of the
modern abstractionist movement. Cordeiro participated in the writing and
launch of the Concreto Manifesto, proclaiming a rupture with figurative
art. In the mid 1960s the artist started a partnership with Professor
Giorgio Moscati, a physicist at the University of São Paulo, in order to
produce computer art. The duo made a series of artworks based on
combinatorial analysis including images generated by derived functions.
This seminar discusses the scenario that led Cordeiro to approach the
mathematical rigour to produce artworks that addressed social, aesthetic
and technological questions.
FABRIZIO AUGUSTO POLTRONIERI is a Brazilian artist and mathematician.
His PhD thesis at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo
(PUC-SP) was titled “An analysis of the role of chance in computer art:
Reflections on the relationship between aesthetic and informational
systems of communication”. Currently, Poltronieri is a Postdoctoral
Fellow at the Royal College of Art in London.
