medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Dr Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
>I just came across something that might be of interest in Eugene de
Lepinois's Histoire de Chartres, in relation to the reforms instituted in 1262
at the Augustinian priory of Saint-Jean-en-Vallee. Among the punishments for
various infractions is the following:
>pour révolte et désobéissance continue à la règle de saint Augustin,
séparation à tout jamais du reste de la communauté et réclusion éternelle
dans un cachot étroit, comme il est de coutume dans les autres maisons
religieuses. (vol. 1, p. 280).
> I've never thought of a hermitage in terms of "solitary confinement"
before.
yes, it sounds like "Throw the guy in the Hole and throw away the Key."
something that our dear Prezziedint-in-Chief, George Obama, wants to do to
Private Manning, "for continually making a fool & a liar out of our Fearless
Leaders."
"comme il est de coutume dans les autres maisons religieuses" --an interesting
idea.
i wonder what Lepinois' source is.
must be some obscure document which Lucien Merlet dug up while doing his
magnificent Inventaire sommaire of the archives d'Eure-et-Loir holdings:
the haystack containing that particular needle used to be available here:
http://www.archives28.fr/ec/index2.php
or here:
http://www.archinoe.net/cg28/ir_liste.php
but the link to the relevant vol., "Série G, t. 1" appears to be dead:
http://www.archinoe.net/cache/serie_g.pdf
curious.
