>Thanks for sharing.
so, i thought i'd share them.
Seasons Greetings, everyone.
>En route to Solesmes next year I'd like to pull off the autoroute
pulling off the autoroute is *always* a good idea, no matter what excuse you
use.
>and re-visit Chartres for a day or two. Is any of this open for visitors
yet? Or will it be hidden behind scaffolding and partitions?
hard for me to answer that, Stan.
1) "next year" is about 11 days away, and i doubt if there will be much change
between now and then.
b) i'm not in Chartres --and haven't been there, in the carne, in 25 years--
so i don't know much about the State of Play in the cathedral, beyond what i
can make out in Henri's snaps.
but, i *think* that the scaffolding goes up and comes down sequentially --that
in the narthex (where the frescoes on the blind tracery are) will probably be
up for some time to come.
but, maybe they might try and get it out of there by the beginning of the
Tourist season in the Spring.
as you can see from the shot down the nave from the western scaffolding,

they've finished the upper sections of the choir down to the main arcade
level.
the original inner face of the main arcade is, you may recall, covered by a
rather obnoxious and sterile 18th c. marble (or faux-marble?) veneer.
i doubt if that will be completely --or even partially-- removed.
though they may likely do some sort of "sondage" through it to see what the
piers of the main arcade look like, whether they are smooth drum-columns or
have a colonnette running down their interior faces, as is found at the
closely related cathedral of Soissons

either way, the choir scaffolding might be removed by the time the 2012
Touristas arrive.
whether they will start on the cleaning of the nave or go to the ambulatory
first, i know not.
if i had my druthers, i'd say do the ambulatory.
but that's because Life is Short and i'd really like to see that ambulatory
clean as a whistle before the Sunset of my Golden Years.
