Industrial Museums Scotland Computer Databases Project
Industrial Museums Scotland (IMS) is a federated partnership brought
together as a result of Ministerial acceptance of a recommendation of
the Scottish Museums Think Tank. IMS operates a partnership to
ensure the sustainability of Scotland’s industrial museums, to deliver
effective public service, to achieve greater recognition of industrial
collections both professionally and publicly to highlight their import
to Scotland’s culture and heritage.
Membership of the group is contingent on Independent Accredited Status
and the custody of a Recognised Industrial Collection.

• Scottish Fisheries Museum*
• Scottish Maritime Museum*
• Scottish Railway Preservation Society

An exciting opportunity has arisen to transform the digital
capabilities of Scotland’s independent industrial museums. We are
seeking a freelance IT Project Manager to oversee the installation of
a new database management system across six of our museums throughout
central Scotland. The successful candidate will be required to assess
existing assets, plan, purchase and configure new equipment, liaise
with database software manufacturers and assist staff with the
transition to new systems.
Ideally, candidates should have broad experience working within SMB
environments, and have strong knowledge of Windows server and client
platforms, networking, backup software, and disaster recovery
procedures. Candidates will be required to demonstrate project
management experience and schedule project milestones, periodically
reporting to upper management. Excellent organisation and
communication skills are therefore essential.
Candidates should possess most, if not all, of the following skills:
• Windows Server 2008 R2 and/or Small Business Server 2011
• Windows 7 configuration and deployment
• Experience of Microsoft Volume Licensing
• Network Routing and Switching using HP or Cisco technologies
• Remote access and VPN solutions
• Server hardware configuration and installation, including ILO
• RAID configuration and backup solutions
• General experience of database management systems
In addition candidates should possess the following attributes
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Scheduling & budget management
• Strong self-discipline and ability to work independently
• Experience of designing and delivering training materials, and
assisting users of varying ability levels
The fee for this contract of work will be around £15k (to include VAT,
travel, contingency and administration expenses). A payment and
reporting schedule will be agreed with the successful candidate.
Candidates will also be required to travel between sites, so access to
own transport is a must.
Successful candidates will be selected on the basis of a written
submission, CV and interview.
