Dear All,
This is for members associated with a UK university, but not
necessarily Royal Astronomical Society members. If you have a promising
student who is eligible for the Runcorn award but you are a Geological Society
rather than a RAS member of the British Geophysical Association, then you
may make a nomination. State on it that you are a GeolSoc
BGA member.

Dear Colleagues,
Can I urge you to nominate candidates for the RAS Penston and Runcorn prizes?
The 2 prizes, each of £1,000, will be awarded for the best doctoral thesis submitted
to a UK university in 2011 in respectively Astronomy or Astrophysics (Penston) and
Geophysics, including Exploration Geophysics; Physics of the Earth's Atmosphere,
Ionosphere or Magnetosphere; Planetary Physics; Solar Physics or Solid-Earth Geophysics
(Runcorn).
In addition to the cash prizes (which includes £50 for runners up) the winners will
be given the opportunity of making a presentation about their thesis to an Ordinary
Meeting of the Society.
Nominations, which should be sent by email attachment before 31st January 2012 to
Lara Maisey ([log in to unmask]), Events and Awards Officer here at the RAS, should:
* be submitted by a Fellow of the Society (normally the student's examiner
or supervisor)
* be in the form of a citation of not more than 500 words
* be accompanied by a copy of the thesis abstract
* contain the names of two referees familiar with the thesis, at least one
of whom should be affiliated to an academic or research establishment other than
that of the candidate. Suitable referees would be the candidate's internal and
external examiners for the doctorate.
Please take this opportunity of assisting a promising student onto their next
career rung since possession of this prize has been a significant boost for
most previous winners.
Regards
David Elliott
