The Social and Solidarity Economies North and South: new jobs and livelihoods for a low carbon economy and society?
A two day seminar in Liverpool, 14th and 15th March 2011.
Organised by Peter North (University of Liverpool), Marcelo Lopes de Silva (Federal University of Rio de Janiero) and Molly Scott Cato (University of Wales Institute Cardiff).
The seminar aims to explore how Latin Americans and people from the UK working within the ‘solidarity’ or ‘popular' urban economies in Latin America, and the ‘social’ economy in the UK, can learn from each other about ways to build low carbon economies and livelihoods, in the context of the need to avoid dangerous climate change.
The Latin American idea of the ‘solidarity economy’ puts the identification of human wants, needs and desires first, with entrepreneurship as a way of organising an economy to provide what was necessary. In contrast, in the UK, many social economy organisations focus on using conventional business tools and entrepreneurial thinking to meet social needs or help those excluded from the formal economy from joining it. What can be learned from ways of thinking about solving problems that put, respectively, human needs or entrepreneurial skills first?
The seminar is over two days, with the first day for a smaller, invited-only audience. The second day is more open, involving activists and development professionals as well as more academic speakers
Invited speakers from Latin America include:
Professor Manfred Max-Neef, Southern University of Chile, an originator of barefoot economics and a winner of the Right Livelihood Award.
Professor Marcelo Lopes de Silva, Federal University of Rio de Janiero (expert on urban social movements and informal economies in cities, and seminar co organiser):
