City/State/Resistance. Spaces of protest in the Middle East and Mediterranean is one of the first academic discussions in Britain that reflects on the Arab uprisings in parallel with protests in Europe and elsewhere. Academics including geographers, political scientists, and historians joined journalists, policy advisers, and think-tank members in a day of discussions at Royal Holloway University of London.
The speakers interpreted the uprisings from a triple perspective: the trans-national links between protests; the role of urban environments in shaping resistance and state responses; the implications for the sovereignty, territoriality, and citizenship.
Presentations covered comparative studies of youth policies in Lebanon and the UK (Lynn Staeheli, Durham), power technologies in Italy and Egypt (Andrea Teti, Aberdeen), the practice of encampment (Adam Ramadan, Cambridge), the domino theory (Sara Fregonese, RHUL), the Israeli perspective on the protests (Yair Wallach, SOAS), and insurgency and counterinsurgency in Cairo (Beirut-based journalist and researcher Lorenzo Trombetta, discussed by Laleh Khalili of SOAS). A closing panel of academics, think tank members and cross partying lobbying groups (Alan Ingram from UCL, Nadim Shehadi from Chatham House, and Chris Doyle from the Council for Arab And British Understanding) expressed views for future Mediterranean geopolitics, connected events in the Arab region to the UK riots, and reflected on the implications of conservative policies and the “big society” in the role of the state and of resistance and activism.
