Thanks for all the responses; the child is a 10 year old with some
behavioural issues so the issues would mainly be rough handling, but not
throwing.
At the moment I think the view is to hold off for the case for the
Slate, given the cost of the alternatives.

Hi All,
One of our very active clients (CP, computer on chair tray all day) was
wearing out a standard laptop each year. We switched to Toughbooks, of
which he is into the second one. They last 2-3 years. The main system is
still running, but connections such as power input and USB wear due to
the constant use. We are considering fitting short extensions to these
connections so they take the brunt of the use, and can be replaced
instead of PCB mounted components.
In short, the Toughbooks cost a lot more, but I think they work out
cheaper in the long term.
Cheers,
James Dean

Hello Claire,
As per Emma Nichols, for a truly ruggedized laptops/tablet PCs I would
definitely consider the range of Panasonic Toughbook Computers at:
http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/fully-rugged-laptop.asp
A number of which have a 6' drop certification.
It is likely to be helpful to clarify exactly the kind of damage that
any device will be subjected - so to establish what PC protection is
actually required, i.e. what devices has the client had previously and
what accidents have befallen them?
