the term "desire lines" is often used. A search on google for "desire
lines" leads to lots of relevant items (you have to filter out the musical
group, but the first entry on my google search is to a nice wikipedia
article).
(Google, it turns out, knows who you are, so two different people entering
the same search terms at identical times will get different results.)
I discuss "desire lines" in my book "Living with complexity." I can send
the relevant chapter to anyone who is interested. In addition, entering
the search term "desire lines norman" also revealed interesting results,
including a number that were a surprise to me.
