Hi Brian
Thanks for that. I have looked at the Linking You Toolkit, and although I think it is worthwhile and educative, it seems to apply only to UK higher education institutions, without reference to a larger educational domain (of Colleges like ourselves, for example) which shares common publishing requirements.
I am not completely convinced by some of the detail in the toolkit proposals (underscores in URIs, deprecation of www subdomain, some of the taxonomical choices: for example, why no intellectual property under legal?).
Possibly there is too tight a coupling between semantics and identifiers (changeable structures versus persistence), and instance identifiers could be distinct from subclasses (possibly /undergraduate/courses(ABC123) instead of /undergraduate/courses/ABC123 to follow the OData convention < http://www.odata.org/developers/protocols/uri-conventions>) to avoid collisions?
However, the toolkit should raise the important issue of planning URI architecture (we have just undergone the pain of consolidating two domains into one and changing our website domain to match our email one).
Anyway, to refer back to my original post, we used our test environment to develop the URL rewrites and test the redirects before moving from old to new.
