CALL FOR PAPERS
The Uses and Abuses of the Landscape:
Exploitation and Conservation in Historic Context
17 November 2012
Centre for English Local History
Marc Fitch House
Salisbury Road
Leicester LE1 7QR
As the country discusses the proposed National Planning Policy Framework, many
see the countryside as more under threat than ever. Others see it as a spur to
development. Yet people have long had a complex relationship with the landscape
around them; exploiting it for food and mineral wealth, shaping it to their own ends,
seeking solace and recreation in its beauties, and defending the latter when seen to
be under threat. This conference seeks to set current concerns in historic context.
Papers are welcome on any period. Speakers may care to consider the following:
The fruits of the land:
* Agriculture: the impact of farming practices on the landscape
* Forestry, woodland management, orchards.
The treasures of the earth:
* Mining
* Quarrying
Power and transport:
* Transport: the impact of road, canal, rail and airport on the landscape
* Harnessing wind and water power
Landscapes of Leisure:
* Hunting landscapes: forests; parks; fox coverts; grouse moors
* The picturesque park
Conservation or Preservation?
* The rise of CPRE, National Trust, etc
* Conflicting visions of the countryside
