British Sociological AssociationLondon Medical Sociology Group Next Meeting on Wednesday, 9th February 6pm
'Virtual Fieldwork using Access Grid'
Professor Nigel Fielding, University of Surrey
Abstract:
This
talk profiles a form of ‘virtual fieldwork’ employing a networked
video-teleconferencing application called Access Grid. It introduces some of
the current uses of Access Grid technology in the social sciences and sets
these in the context of debates about online fieldwork environments and Computer-Mediated
Communication. Issues derived from the CMC literature inform an account of an
empirical study of participant experiences of Access Grid-mediated fieldwork.
The research considered both general matters of participant satisfaction with
this form of CMC and the nature of virtual
fieldwork relationships relative to those that mark conventional ‘co-present’
fieldwork. The talk concludes with a discussion of the nature of participant engagement
in online fieldwork and the implications for the debate about whether online
methods constitute a distinctive form of fieldwork.
Venue: King’s College London, Room 1.16, Franklin Wilkins Building, Stamford Street, London SE1 6NN
