still, i can't recall an example of it in the West (certainly not pre- 1200
--Nerezi is 1160s-- but i presume that the iconography would have traveled
west after 1204, at least).

i just took a quick glance (the Bain of would-be Iconographers) and didn't see
the beard on the other fellow with him, assumed it was Paul, not having seen
the fellows to the right of the baldichin.

i'm not all that Up to Snuff on Andy's appearance, myself.
the flabellum, i'm familiar with, and that's part of what gave it away, for
me.
