medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This is a bit of topic, but discussion of the "g" in "Marjorie" brings up the question of the "j" and "v"
in "Jehovah".
My question for the linguists is: when did the modern "J" and "V" (as opposed to something more like
modern "Y" and "W", as still pronounced in other Germanic languages) develop?
Meg

(A lot I know!)
But I'm not as "out there" as this one:
http://www.meaning-of-baby-girl-names.org.uk/first-name-meanings-m/meaning-of-marjorie.htm
There does seem to be some disagreement about the origins but all agree that "Marjorie" has "pearl" as its basic meaning. I would say that "Marjorie," "Margaret" and "Marguerite" (French for "daisy" and also "pearl" in some circumstances, i.e. a device for women with that name such as the sister of Francois Ier) are all from the same root, the Greek word for "pearl." However the first entry above says it is of English origin.
