My name is Sophie Chaffe and I am a final year undergraduate marketing student at Plymouth University.
For my dissertation topic I have chosen to research the visitor motivations to dark tourist attractions and the subsequent implications for the marketing of such attractions. Being a marketing student I have never studied tourism before at all and so am very new to the area. However I have always been interested in place branding and tourism marketing and I knew I wanted to do my dissertation in this area, so that is how I came to choose this topic. For my primary research I have chosen a mainly quantitative approach and intend to conduct a survey on visitors to the London Dungeon in the form of a questionnaire. I may also do some brief interviews beforehand to get a better idea of questionnaire content.
I am currently researching information and literature on dark tourism and I have found the Dark Tourism Forum to be an incredibly good resource which has pointed me to some excellent literature and other sources of information. So I would like to say thank you to Philip Stone and everyone else involved for creating and maintaining it as its been a huge help!
If anybody can offer me any further advice or input it would be greatly appreciated. Whilst I'm finding the topic of dark tourism to be really interesting, I'm also finding it quite daunting so any insight from those experienced in the field would definitely help me a lot.
Thanks again for creating the forum and I hope to do the area justice in my dissertation.
