Thank you for all those who contributed suggestions on projects using crowd sourcing technologies for public access transcription. I have provided a summary of suggested sites below - they may be of interest to people but by no means represent a comprehensive survey of what is out there; rather they perhaps give an idea about the range and possibilities for using crowdsourcing technology.
It started out as a passing interest spurred on by a chance conversation with a friend about the technologies and I have written about this on the new Birmingham Archives and Heritage's blog:
www.theironroom.wordpress.com
That's enough of a shameless plug!
However since airing the idea it has generated quite a bit of interest from colleagues and I am definitely going to explore the idea further.
Here are a summary of the suggested sites, all a little bit different:
Old Weather (WWI ship's log books): http://www.oldweather.org/
Jeremy Bentham http://www.ucl.ac.uk/transcribe-bentham/
Ancient Lives http://ancientlives.org/
Charles Dickens project: http://www.djo.org.uk/
V and A collections: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/crowdsourcing/
http://openshakespeare.org
paintings: http://tagger.thepcf.org.uk
Alfred Russel Wallace letters: http://wallaceletters.info/
Children's hospital records: http://hharp.org/about/
National library of Australia: http://trove.nla.gov.au
BMD/family history projects:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
A blog about transcription software:
http://manuscripttranscription.blogspot.com/
And also a very helpful pointer to conference proceedings
http://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/conferences/3d/programme/
which I'm going to have a proper look at - it's a salient point that the computer on my desk in the office is not equipped to deal with the video clips so I will have to listen to them from home.
