Job Summary
Faculty - Mathematics and Physical Sciences
School/Department - Mathematics
Research Fellow
Fixed term for 36 months, estimated starting date 1 January 2012
Project Title - Stochastic modelling of T cell responses: chemical skin
sensitisation
Applications are invited for a research fellowship funded by Unilever on
stochastic modelling of T cell responses. The project involves the
development of stochastic models that describe cytotoxic and helper T cell
responses following exposure to a chemical sensitiser. The focus of the
project will be to numerically implement the mathematical models
developed, and to test, validate and refine the models with experimental
data. The model will be used to enhance our understanding of T cell
responses following exposure to a chemical sensitiser, and to estimate the
size, quality and diversity of the T cell response. This is a
multi-disciplinary project, as well as an inter-sectorial project that
combines ideas from physics, applied mathematics, statistics, probability
and immunology, and that involves both industrial and academic partners.
You will work in close contact with the Principal Investigators (PIs)
Professor Carmen Molina-Paris and Dr Grant Lythe, and will interact with
other members of the Mathematical Biology and Medicine Group in the School
of Mathematics. The project also requires working in close contact with
Unilever scientists.
You should hold (or have submitted) a PhD in a relevant discipline (such
as applied mathematics, physics, or mathematical biology) and have
excellent analytical and programming skills. More specialist knowledge of
mathematical biology, stochastic processes, C-programming,
Python-programming, or immunology is desirable.
You should include in your application a research description that details
your current and future research plans (maximum two pages A4).
University Grade 6 (GBP 24,370 - GBP 29,099p.a.) or Grade 7 (GBP 29,972
GBP 35,788p.a.). The salary spine point is subject to external funding
conditions which will limit the starting salary to a maximum of GBP 31,798
p.a.
Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Carmen Molina-Paris, tel +44
(0)113 343 5151, email [log in to unmask]
Closing Date: 28 November 2011
Interviews are expected to be held on 20 December 2012
