BACKGROUND
Many organizations employ equality and diversity specialists. A growing body of literature explores the experiences of these specialists. Recent work suggests that equality and diversity specialists are employed to ensure that organizations comply with equality legislation rather than to pursue a radical social justice agenda (Tatli, 2010). In fact, such actors are embedded within organizational politics and practices and may have to strategically manipulate these norms in order to achieve their aims (Ozbilgin and Tatli, 2006). Interviews with equality and diversity specialists suggest that many feel marginalized within their organization and that those who do under the work from a social justice perspective may find it conflicts with their role as managers (Lawrence, 2000). Further, women and ethnic minority E&D specialists may be further isolated (Healey et al., 2011). Although there is no defined route into equality and diversity management, being able to use business discourse is very important (Tatli, 2010). Indeed, diversity specialists (as they are now known) themselves place a greater emphasis on the business case for equality and diversity (Kirton and Greene, 2009). This may bring them into conflict with other E&D actors, such as trade union officers (Tatli, 2010). Further work is needed to understand these tensions.
We are seeking empirical and theoretical papers which add to our understanding of diversity management within organizations. In particular, papers which explore the experiences of those engaged in managing equality and diversity, the strategies they employ and the outcomes they identify are welcomed. Papers from practitioners as well as academics working in this area are also welcome. Papers may want to consider, but are not limited to:
1. Who is responsible for managing equality and diversity within organizations?
2. What strategies do these individuals employ to reach their aims?
3. What are the experiences of those engaged in such work?
4. Are there differences by sector?
5. What does effective diversity management look like?
6. What is the future for equality and diversity management?
7. What are the dynamics of competing voices in equality and diversity management?
