Hello, everyone: I have two requests or questions which some of you may be
able to help me with:
(1) Has anyone ever measured the Neolithic dog skull and skeleton from
Windmill Hill, Silchester? I have a photo of this skeleton, from whence I
know not; it is mounted and apparently on exhibit somewhere. Can anyone
point me to the appropriate publication? Does 'Smith' ring a bell?
(2) I am now in quest of photos of dog skulls/jaws of KNOWN BREED. I've
already had help on this from Will Higgs, Marc Nussbaumer at Berne, Chris
Darwent at the U. Calif. Davis Zooarchaeology Lab, Jacqui Huntley and
Louisa Gidney at Durham University, and Bob Timm at the Univ. Kansas
Museum of Natural History, Division of Mammals. I also have a line on a
large private collection which I'll probably get to see next month.
However! My appetite is somewhat insatiable because the study demands both
variety and depth, and it turns out that known-breed dogs are not that
common in collections.
If anyone can help by sending photos by EMail, I would be very thankful
and grateful. You can EMail me off-list at: [log in to unmask]
