THE ROBERT H. SMITH ANNUAL LECTURE
Representation, Replication, Reproduction: Sculpted Portraits of Renaissance Rulers
Given by Professor Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Princeton University.
Tuesday 6 December 2011
Lecture Theatre
19.00-20.00
All portraits of Renaissance rulers are in several senses forms of representation: as likenesses, as representatives of the absent ruler, and as ideal images. It was also possible to replicate them in the form of portrait busts and medals in bronze and other metals, or as printed images, which could be more widely distributed. Focusing on works on display in the V&A and comparable examples, the lecture will discuss the sculpted legacy of Charles V in the Holy Roman Empire as an expression of princely majesty.
Free, advance booking essential. Please call the Booking office on +44 (0)20 7942 2211, 9.00-17.30, Monday - Friday (closed Bank Holidays). You can also book online 24 hours a day through What's On, although a handling charge per transaction applies.
