Students at the Heart of the System

How to fulfil their learning needs?

A conference offered by the Academic and Professional Publishing
Division of The Publishers Association

21 November at the ICO Conference Centre, 22 Berners St, London W1T 3DD

The conference begins at 10 am and will conclude with a wine reception.

The White Paper on the future of Higher Education in the UK, Higher
Education: Students at the Heart of the System presents universities and
colleges with the most profound challenges they have faced since the
public sector assumed responsibility for supporting students in the
1940s. The 2011 Publishers Association academic conference for academics
and publishers will therefore focus on discussing the White Paper and
its implications. Highlights will include:

* A keynote from Professor Ian Diamond, Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Aberdeen, who headed the UUK Efficiency and Modernisation
Task Group which produced recommendations to support measurable
improvements in efficiency, and an open discussion to follow.

* A student forum, in which students from different disciplines
at London universities will discuss how the White Paper will affect them
and future generations of students.

* Case studies of two of the initiatives developed jointly by
individual universities and the private sector which are cited in the
White Paper.

* Two innovative publishing ventures which seek to address the
future demands of the sector as foreshadowed by the White Paper.

* An open forum to discuss all the issues raised during the
conference, followed by a drinks reception.

The objective of the conference is for academics and publishers to
enhance their understanding of what the White Paper means for them in
terms of developing and delivering teaching and learning resources in a
rapidly-changing, diversified environment which truly puts students 'at
the heart of the system'.

Who should attend?

This aims to be a wide-ranging conference on a subject of critical
importance to anyone associated with the academic sector. Following its
own tradition, the conference will encourage academics and publishers to
share ideas, ambitions and concerns, but it will be as relevant for
educationists, librarians, booksellers and students themselves.

Even more than with its predecessors, the sponsors want this conference
to attract both publishers and academics in significant numbers. So
this year we have set up a registration system whereby publishers can
bring an academic guest for the price of their ticket. Academic staff
members, whether academics, library or administrative staff, are also
welcome to attend without a publisher sponsor at a special discounted
rate. We hope thereby to make the conference audience as relevant and
incisive as possible.

programme, and to register.
