Shelton Heritage Project
Project Officer advert
Shelton Hospital is one of the last remaining Asylums in the Country serving the population of Shropshire, Telford and beyond.
The hospital will soon be replaced with a brand new inpatient facility on an adjacent site that will offer people in the community a building and a service that better fits the needs of the 21st century.
The new facility is currently in the process of being built and we are keen to embark on a heritage project that explores the history and social relevance of the existing Shelton Hospital at this point in time, before the building ceases to be used as a hospital.
We are looking to engage a Project Officer who can lead on this project to work alongside a number of volunteers and hospital staff – and who can reach out to the wider community and gather information, stories, memorabilia etc that is of huge importance to the history of the building and the mental health service over the years.
There is already an existing archive for the hospital being held at Shropshire Archives, but also material that has yet not been catalogued. It is envisaged that any valuable information and findings will be catalogued and added to the exisiting archive for future generations to access.
We are looking for a professional with experience of managing a project of this scale and complexity. Someone who is good with people and attracting interest to the project, but who also has some experience of archive or museums work to back up the necessary research involved in the project.
We are looking for expressions of interest in this freelance post at this stage.
