I'm no expert on profit and loss accounting but in the next XerteFriday session this coming Friday lunchtime I'll be showing how to use xerte to develop the skill of graph and table interpretation. Although the subject will be different (it's Geography and Earth Sciences this month) the techniques are all transferable and you might get some inspiration. I'll be sending round more info in a few minutes.
